Dermatographism, sometimes called skin writing, happens when firm stroking or scratching leaves a raised, red line on the skin. It's one of the more common physical forms of urticaria and is usually more of a nuisance than a danger. A doctor can often confirm it simply by gently running a tongue depressor across the skin.
